Hair fall: when it is normal and when to see a doctor
Losing some hair every day is normal. Here is how to tell everyday shedding from a problem that needs treatment.

It is normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs a day. They are replaced by new growth, so you do not notice a difference.
Signs that need attention
- Clumps of hair in your comb or on the pillow
- A widening parting or visible scalp
- Round bald patches
- A receding hairline at a young age
- Itching, redness or flaking on the scalp
Common causes
Stress, illness, thyroid problems, low iron or vitamin levels, hormonal changes and genetics are the most common reasons. Many of these are treatable once identified.
What a trichologist does
A scalp examination and, where needed, blood tests help find the cause. Treatment may be as simple as correcting a deficiency. Transplant is considered only when hair loss is advanced and permanent.
